Newly post-QE second years (3 for 3!!!) Shaw group members Nina Howard, Anna Lo and Lucas Souza spent last May the 4th demonstrating oobleck to 4-6th graders at Marguerite Montgomery Elementary school! That’s one way to celebrate a graduate student milestone.
Oobleck is a non-newtonian fluid made out of water and cornstarch. With a little help from green food coloring and Dr. Seuss, the demonstration was a huge hit with the kids!
Congratulations to Jared for being awarded the 2018 Distinguished Teaching Award for Undergraduate Teaching at UC Davis!
This is one of the most prestigious awards granted on the campus and recognizes outstanding commitment to teaching and mentoring. Nominations provided perspectives from both students and faculty.
Professor Shaw currently teaches the CHEM 131 Advanced Organic Synthesis course for undergraduates offered in the fall. In addition, The Shaw group has a rich history of undergraduate research and is currently home to three undergraduates working on a variety of projects.
For more information about the undergraduate chemists in our group, please visit the members page!
The Shaw group would like to welcome Benjamin Bergstrom from the 2017 UC Davis Department of Chemistry Graduate Cohort!
Ben received his B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities in August 2015. He worked in the lab of Dr. Wayland E. Noland on the synthesis of biologically-active small molecules. Ben also worked for Upsher-Smith Laboratories, synthesizing pharmaceutical impurities.

The Shaw Group is looking to hire a postdoc. For details, see this page.
Edit: The position has been filled!
Congratulations to Jared for being awarded the distinction of an American Association for the Advancement of Science fellow, 2017!
“2017 AAAS Fellows will be recognized at the 2018 AAAS Annual Meeting in Austin, Texas, where they will be presented a rosette pin with its gold and blue colors to signify science and engineering, respectively.”

Congratulations to Flora Rutaganira, a former undergrad in the Shaw lab, for being selected as one of twelve HHMI Hanna Gray Fellows this year! This fellowship serves to recognize the excellent science fellows perform early in their career, and provides funding through a postdoc and into early tenure-track faculty positions.
The Shaw group bids farewell to postdoc Jesus Cordova Guerrero, undergraduate Ada Kwong, and summer researchers Barry Rich and Kris Mckendall.
Jesus has accepted a position as a professor at Cal Lutheran, Ada has been accepted into the chemistry Ph.D. program at Northwestern University, and Barry and Kris return to Rhodes and XULA, respectively. Although we’re really looking forward to see the great things they do in the future, we can’t help but be a little sad to see them go.
